Ancient city of Rhamnous

discover1.jpg

There are numerous places and buildings that point to the historicity of our area and which are definitely worth visiting (with the appropriate guidance)!  Of remarkable and great historical importance is the ancient of Ramnous!

The most remote of the ancient municipalities of Attica and due to its location at the South Evian Gulf were the harbor used to provide a safe anchorage for ships.

The archeological site of Rhamnous is located a few km outside the village of Grammatiko and during the glorious ancient years Rhamnous was famous for the goddess Nemesis the most important sanctuary of the deity in Greece!

Part of the historical site of Rhamnous are also the theater of Lemnos Dionysos and the fortress of the area which was located there for strategic reasons!

HATON BRIDGE

Between the surrounding mountains of the village of Grammatiko and Sesi lies the beautiful preserved stone bridge of Haton (Iaton) build in 1892.

As the largest arched bridge of Attica it was constructed to serve the train line of the Italian metal mines for the transportation of metals to the small harbor of Limniona from where it was shipped for export to Germany.

Haton is the name of the engineer that constructed the bridge and it’s said that he also constructed all the bridges along the route of the rack railway of the Famous Kalavrita to Diakopto route through the Vouraikos Gorge.

In the future planning of Athens / Attica (RAS) 2021 (January 2012), which is the promotion of areas of culture, tourism and recreation in Eastern Attica, it is said that the iron mines in Grammatiko with the train will be reconstructed as a touristic feature!
